The Dreadful Penny

By Ralph Saunderson

Playing Up celebrated their 10th anniversary by devising this Victorian comedy adventure, which then toured between 6th and 30th November 2013 to venues in the South West. They then revised and extended the script for a production at The Mission Theatre, Bath in 2017.

A furious pace, rapid costume and scenery changes plus non-stop jokes from the totally committed (they should be) cast make for a fun, unmissable evening.
The Bath Chronicle 2013

Just four actors perform a hilarious and astonishing array of roles. This is a witty play with more action in one evening than most box set blockbusters can ever hope to achieve. In short - local, live theatre at its most enjoyable.

The Trial

By Steven Berkoff

Playing Up staged their first Berkoff play, The Trial (adapted from Franz Kafka) between 15th and 18th February 2017 at The Rondo.

Performed with panache by all…always with exquisite style and occasional humour. It should sell out.
Listomania

This is a strong production, the piece has many challenges. The multi role playing is intense and successful, giving a true flavour of Berkoff and his use of the Greek style chorus. Thought provoking and enjoyable.

The Beaux Stratagem

By Georges Farquhar

Playing up staged their modern take on this restoration comedy to huge laughs at The Rondo between 2nd and 5th November 2016.

This version benefits from modernisation … a much wittier play than one might expect. It’s a period romp and Playing Up have done a great job of updating it for a contemporary audience.

The 39 Steps

By John Buchan and Patrick Barlow

Playing Up performed this fast paced comedy thriller to packed house at The Rondo Theatre between 4th and 7th November 2015.

A fast paced, witty and exuberant celebration of all that is great about theatre. Playing Up is in the very safe hands of director Sophie Brooks who keeps the pace hurtling along with an inventive set, many props and a cast who are a joy to watch. This is tremendous fun and well worth grabbing a ticket before they are all sold.

Death and The Maiden

By Ariel Dorfman

Playing up presented Dorfman’s powerful and painfully relevant play at The Rondo between 18th and 22nd February 2015.

This is a difficult play, which at times feels like an emotional onslaught. It is admirable to see this excellent cast take on such a challenging and thought provoking play in this troubled political climate…it will no doubt raise much further discussion.

Catch-22

Playing staged this rarely performed theatrical adaptation of Heller’s novel at The Rondo between 5th and 8th November 2014.

Don’t be fooled by the book. This rarely performed play is much faster, generally funnier and more absurd and Playing Up certainly get the laughs. Playing to sell out audiences you’ll be lucky to get a seat but it’s well worth trying.

The Tamworth Two

By Dougie Blaxland

Playing Up presented The Tamworth Two between 27th April and 5th June 2011.

Playing Up's production of The Tamworth Two was as inventive as it was theatrical. The three actors combined the elements of physical and verbal humour brilliantly, bringing pace, vitality and wit to the play. Their mastery of the strange syntax and rhythms of the piece was most impressive as were the precise, keenly observed and astonishingly swift changes of character. In all, they created a wonderful piece of comic theatre that held their audience spell bound with admiration.
